Due to a cross country move, not having a home for the past three months, and now working a crazy amount of hours… Hunting Midnight has taken a backseat for now. Planning to make some additions to the site to including photography & other creations I’ve been working on, in addition to the music blog.
For the moment, you can check out what’s taking up all of my (limited) free time here: We Are Like the Spider
I happened to come across this video all of fifteen minutes ago. Needless to say, I don’t know much about Manganese Madness but I do know I’m loving this straight out of the gate.
Dame is a lovely dose of heavy, fuzzy, dream-entranced perfection for a dreary day like today. After a week of rain and gray skies it’s more than easy to slip right into this track… and want to lie there for another week. As for the video (below) -simplicity at one of its finer moments.
I look forward to hearing more, but for now you can go here to purchase a track from itunes and also download a free mp3.
Apparently taking on a second job has severely inhibited my abilities to keep up with this blog. So, long overdue – and I’m sure those who care about this post are full aware – but I’ve definitely been digging The Kills‘ new album Blood Pressures for a few weeks now. Can’t say I love it as much as Midnight Boom, but all around pretty solid. I would have to say that lyrically I don’t find it as strong as the former, but it’s always a good sign when it’s getting repeat plays in my car.
Here is a video from their first single from the album, which you can purchase here.
Gazelle Twin is the brain child of Elizabeth Walling – Brighton singer, composer, performer, filmmaker and visual artist. Her work could easily be the love child of the Fever Ray and David Lynch, with a chilling quality all of its own.
Eerie, atmospheric, desolate, fragile, beautiful … Gazelle Twin drags me to the bottom of the lake only to hurl me back to the surface and leave me gasping for more.
Below is her video for Changelings.
Check out her website for more information. Gazelle Twin’s debut album is set to be released digitally through Anti-Ghost Moon Ray Records, Summer 2011.
Thanks to my friend Lee I have a new obsession – she is the wonderful Saint Saviour. Not only is This Ain’t No Hymn breathtakingly beautiful (with music and vocals reminiscent of iamamiwhoami), this video blows me away. It looks like something straight out of Planet Earth’s Deep Sea. Hands down best video I’ve seen this year.
Saint Saviour as a gorgeous dancing glowing jellyfish:
This electronic duo has been making some waves on the blog scene the past several months – and with good reason. Labyrinth Ear employ vocals which are at once both provocative and virtuous. Their melodies haunting yet alluring. They master the combination of simple with strong beats, in addition to an array of riveting sounds poking in from time to time to hold your attention. Labyrinth Ear are one of my new favourites this year and suffice to say they could easily work their way onto your list as well.
The best part is that they are offering all their songs for FREE download on their soundcloud. Or you can get their new EP OAK here. I would definitely take advantage of the generosity – we’ll be hearing more from these guys in the future.
WILD FLOWERS is my top track so far, along with SNOW WHITE (whose intro reminds me of a hint of Fever Ray). Check out their video for the song below.
Looking forward to sharing more Labyrinth Ear with you in the future! Check out their facebook here as well.
Still in the beginning stages of the blog, I will continue to feature some of the bands I’ve been really into, although some of them have been around for awhile and it may mean some of the music has been out for awhile. Such is the case with this post.
I’ve been heavily into A Place To Bury Strangers for some time now. Known for the loudness of their live shows, the heaviness in their music carries a lot of weight with me. With its sonic sound expertly crafted and larger than life, Exploding Head was one of my top five albums of 2009 and has been on heavy rotation since. They are currently on tour and you can find tour dates, videos, releases and more at their website.
Below is one of my favourite tracks from Exploding Head:
David Lynch is known best for his film resume, which includes Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet – among many others. Known for his unorthodox approach to film-making (later coined Lynchian), Lynch’s films contain dreamlike – or perhaps better said, nightmarish – sequences that aren’t quickly forgotten. Some love him, some hate him. I’m of the former.
Another characteristic that sets apart his films is the superbly-crafted sound design. Before I was aware that David Lynch actually composed portions of the music for his film, the incredible use of sound in his movies always stood out. When I heard music he’s released (much of which is featured in his film work) I became a fan of that as well.
Ghost of Love is definitely my favourite track released by Lynch and was featured on his more recent film Inland Empire.
Here is a video for one of his more recent releases, I Know. A video contest was held and of the 450 submissions the following was selected as a runner up.
Like his films, Lynch’s music may not be for everyone … but it’s definitely for me. Check out David Lynch Music Company to purchase music along with info on new and upcoming releases.
A little more “pop” than I usually go for, I have a weakness for extravagance and this ballerina-turned-musician gives me just that. While her songs do host a number of playful, tickling sounds I am attracted to her video eye candy. In a market that is easily becoming over-saturated with electropop leading ladies, Oh Land is doing a fine job of standing out. You can download her music here on itunes.
